Lost your wallet? Do this before you cancel anything.

The instinct is to start canceling everything immediately. Don't, not yet. Freezing buys you the same protection without the hassle if it turns up in an hour.

Do this in order

  1. Retrace your last few stops. Especially anywhere you paid for something, that's the moment a wallet most often gets set down and left behind.
  2. Freeze your cards, don't cancel them yet. Every major bank and card app can lock a card instantly. It stops new charges and reverses in seconds if the wallet turns up. Canceling means a new number and updating every subscription tied to it.
  3. Check a tracker app if you have one. A Tile Slim or wallet-sized AirTag card left inside can show a last-known location through the crowdsourced finder network, even out of your own Bluetooth range.
  4. Report the license once you're sure. Most states handle it online through the DMV. Report it lost, not stolen, unless you have a real reason to think otherwise, it's a simpler process.
  5. Write off cash and gift cards early. Unlike bank cards, there's no issuer to call. If it's not found quickly, that part usually isn't coming back.

If you paid with it recently

Call that business first. Wallets left at a register or a restaurant table are commonly turned in within the hour, and staff will often hold it at the front rather than logging it anywhere searchable.

If it's genuinely gone

Freeze becomes cancel for anything you can't verify is safe within a day or two. Replace the license through your state DMV, and consider a credit freeze with the three bureaus if the wallet had your Social Security card or number in it, which it shouldn't, going forward.

How do I find my lost wallet?
