Your phone is IP68. Your watch says 5 ATM. So why does a trip through the washing machine kill them anyway? Because a wash cycle is nothing like the test those ratings are based on. Here's what the ratings actually mean, and the physics of why a washer beats every one of them.
You'll notice reputable manufacturers almost never say "waterproof." They say water-resistant, and the difference is the whole point. "Waterproof" implies water can never get in, ever. For a device full of ports, seams, and glued-in glass, that's not true. What they actually sell you is resistance up to a tested limit, and that resistance degrades over time with age, drops, heat, and every prior soaking. The rating described a factory-fresh device in a lab. Yours is neither.
An "IP" rating (like IP67 or IP68) has two digits: the first is dust protection, the second is water. Here's the water half, in plain terms:

The tell is in the last column. Every IP water test uses stagnant, fresh water at a controlled temperature for a defined, short time. Salt, chlorine, and soap are explicitly not tested, because they attack the seals.
Watches use a different scale. Atmospheres of pressure (ATM) or an equivalent depth in meters. It's badly misunderstood, because the "meters" are a lab pressure equivalent, not how deep you can actually go:

Watch makers spell it out: these ratings assume still or gently moving clean water, and they specifically warn against hot water, soap, steam, and mechanical impact. Every one of which a washing machine delivers.
A wash cycle stacks five things at once, and the ratings account for none of them:
Put it together: a device rated for a 30-minute still dip in clean, cool water is facing an hour of hot, soapy, 1,400-RPM tumbling. The rating doesn't just fall short. It was never measuring this in the first place.
Honestly? Nothing with a battery or a circuit board. Water resistance buys you a margin against life's small accidents. Rain, a splash, a quick drop in the sink. It is not a laundry rating, and no consumer device is designed or certified for a wash cycle. No. IP68 is a clean, still, short freshwater test. It doesn't cover detergent, heat, prolonged exposure, or the spin cycle. Treat a washed phone as water-damaged.
"Waterproof" implies nothing ever gets in, not true of electronics. "Water-resistant" means it resists water up to a tested rating that also weakens over time. That's why makers use the second term.
