Waterproof vs. water-resistant: why your "water-rated" device still dies in the wash

Your phone is IP68. Your watch says 5 ATM. So why does a trip through the washing machine kill them anyway? Because a wash cycle is nothing like the test those ratings are based on. Here's what the ratings actually mean, and the physics of why a washer beats every one of them.

The short answer: water ratings are tested in clean, still, cool water for a few minutes. A washing machine is hot, soapy, high-pressure, and long, and it tumbles at up to 1,400 RPM. None of that is what the rating covers, so a "water-resistant" device in the wash is simply a water-damaged device waiting to happen.

First: "waterproof" isn't really a thing

You'll notice reputable manufacturers almost never say "waterproof." They say water-resistant, and the difference is the whole point. "Waterproof" implies water can never get in, ever. For a device full of ports, seams, and glued-in glass, that's not true. What they actually sell you is resistance up to a tested limit, and that resistance degrades over time with age, drops, heat, and every prior soaking. The rating described a factory-fresh device in a lab. Yours is neither.

What the ratings actually mean

Phones & earbuds: the IP code

An "IP" rating (like IP67 or IP68) has two digits: the first is dust protection, the second is water. Here's the water half, in plain terms:

The tell is in the last column. Every IP water test uses stagnant, fresh water at a controlled temperature for a defined, short time. Salt, chlorine, and soap are explicitly not tested, because they attack the seals.

Watches: ATM and "meters"

Watches use a different scale. Atmospheres of pressure (ATM) or an equivalent depth in meters. It's badly misunderstood, because the "meters" are a lab pressure equivalent, not how deep you can actually go:

Watch makers spell it out: these ratings assume still or gently moving clean water, and they specifically warn against hot water, soap, steam, and mechanical impact. Every one of which a washing machine delivers.

Why a washing machine beats every rating

A wash cycle stacks five things at once, and the ratings account for none of them:

  1. Agitation and spin pressure. Ratings are static, a still dip. A washer tumbles and then spins at 800–1,400 RPM, which generates G-forces and dynamic water pressure far beyond a calm 1-meter soak. That pressure drives water past seals that were only ever rated for still water.
  2. Detergent breaks the seals. Soap is a surfactant. It lowers water's surface tension and eats at the adhesives, gaskets, and water-repellent coatings that keep a device sealed. Soapy water gets in where clean water can't, and IP tests use plain water only.
  3. Heat. Ratings are tested at mild temperatures. A warm or hot cycle expands and contracts the seals and materials, opening gaps that weren't there in the lab.
  4. Duration. IP67 is a 30-minute test. A wash plus rinse plus spin can run 45–90 minutes. Long past the window anything was rated for.
  5. Age and wear. Water resistance isn't permanent. Every drop, prior splash, and month of use has already weakened the seals, so a two-year-old phone isn't performing to its original IP68 anyway.

Put it together: a device rated for a 30-minute still dip in clean, cool water is facing an hour of hot, soapy, 1,400-RPM tumbling. The rating doesn't just fall short. It was never measuring this in the first place.

So what's actually safe in the wash?

Honestly? Nothing with a battery or a circuit board. Water resistance buys you a margin against life's small accidents. Rain, a splash, a quick drop in the sink. It is not a laundry rating, and no consumer device is designed or certified for a wash cycle. Common questions

Is my IP68 phone safe in the washing machine?

No. IP68 is a clean, still, short freshwater test. It doesn't cover detergent, heat, prolonged exposure, or the spin cycle. Treat a washed phone as water-damaged.

What's the real difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

"Waterproof" implies nothing ever gets in, not true of electronics. "Water-resistant" means it resists water up to a tested rating that also weakens over time. That's why makers use the second term.

Does soap really matter?

A lot. Detergent lowers water's surface tension and degrades the seals, so soapy water penetrates where plain water wouldn't. IP ratings test plain fresh water only.

My watch is 5 ATM / 50 m. Can it handle a wash?

No. That's a static pressure rating in clean water and excludes hot water, soap, and mechanical impact. Exactly what a wash cycle is.
